Match and Build Patterns Activity with Unifix Cubes

Understanding patterns is a beginning math skill for young kids.  Patterns help children realize there is order in the world around them as well as with mathematical concepts. This activity helps children learn that each section in a pattern matches the first section, all sections look the same, and once matching sections are put together they can build different patterns. All you need is unifix cubes and a little learner– making this activity super easy to do without any prep!

My daughter found this activity fun and not at all boring or frustrating which sometimes can end up happening when she is learning something new. As she was building with unifix cubes I watched a light bulb go on and she quickly discovered she could make tons and tons of patterns that were originally too challenging-yay! By breaking patterns down into groups she could move beyond simple AB patterns and explain to me that patterns are made up of matching units that repeat in the same order.

You Will Need

  • Unifix cubes

Directions

  • Pick out two unifix cubes that are different colors and place one on top of the other. Have child make several copies of the first stack.
  • Place the stacks in a row and have child observe to make sure all the stacks look the same. The pattern will not work if there are any mismatching pieces. Make any adjustments if needed.

  • Have child connect the stacks to make a row and then look at the pattern.

  • Have child verbalize the pattern by saying the color of each unifix cube. Having children verbalize the pattern is another way to help them learn.
  • Repeat activity.
  • To increase difficulty, add more unifix cubes to the beginning stack. As the child understands patterns have them create the first stack and continue the activity independently.  Different pattern types to try include: AB, ABC, AAAB, AABC, ABB, AAB, ABCC, and AABB.
